Crane Operation: Be Safe, Not Sorry

Category: Trucks suvs - March 31, 2009

Accidents due to some ones irresponsibility keep happening round the clock. And you will not be surprised to know that cranes at construction sites, oil rigs and mines are the cause of fatal injuries and even deaths. Not ensuring the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a major cause for these accidents. It could also be the case that the crane operator is not well trained or skilled enough to take preventive safety measures and is unaware of emergency procedures.

All heavy equipment training institutions offer specialized training with regard to safety operations and emergency procedures. During the course you will be taught various safety precautions that will help you perform your duties as a crane operator to the best of your ability and in a responsible manner. The following points will give you a gist of what you should keep in mind while operating a crane.

1.Inspect your crane extensively and thoroughly before you make any moves. Check for loose or missing parts, dysfunctional switches or control buttons. See that latches and springs are secure and work the way they are supposed to. Check the load chain, sheaves and sheave guard for any irregularities. Do not ignore anything different from the usual and get the problem rectified immediately.

2.Be very clear about the load capacity and see that it never exceeds the limit. As a crane operator, you have every right to refuse to lift the load if the safety and weight of the load is in perspective.

3.Make sure that the load is rigged and fastened correctly prior to lifting it. You can consult your site supervisor for any clarifications. Make use of the load indicating device, but you still have the last say. So be sure before you take any action.

4.This goes without saying, but a reminder always helps. Make sure that your path is cleared of all people, stray animals and obstacles.

5.Always maintain a safe distance from power lines, irrespective of whether they are energized or not. Coming in contact with power lines is a major reason for deaths on construction sites.

6.Prepare yourself for an emergency. You should always use a signaling device which is audible and can be used to warn people around you. Procedures for retrieving an operator during an emergency must be carried out. Fire extinguishers on board are a must.

This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as safety while operating a crane is concerned. You should be in possession of full knowledge of safety measures and procedures before you venture out as a crane operator. Your training institution has a major role to play here. This of course is not possible without your individual sense of understanding and ability to grasp a situation in its totality.
