Upgrading Your BMW
One of the most common queries I get is “What should I do first?”. There are so many BMW performance options out there and some products are not going to give you the results you desire. It is crucial that you select wisely, buy good quality parts, and install them correctly.
For most newer BMWs, the best horsepower gain per dollar is through a performance software upgrade. There are a whole host of manufacturers out there who offer software downloads to increase power and torque and also usually remove the top speed limiter and raise the redline. For BMWs manufactured after 1996 in the USA this is a must. Until the software is upgraded, an intake or performance exhaust will not result in any increased power.
After the software upgrade, then I would buy a BMW air intake to get more oxygen and cooler air into the engine. These are typically fairly simple to install.
Once these steps are finished, then consider a performance exhaust. This will result in less back pressure, more horsepower and a more aggressive exhaust note. Brands like Supersprint, Remus, and Borla are some of the best BMW upgrades and can be found at most BMW parts shops. Do some homework to make sure you are purchasing from a retailer that can provide you the best recommendation for your specific model of car. Buying the right part the first time, before you install it, will make sure yo get the performance gains you paid for.
Each of these upgrades is easily reversible and will increase the driving enjoyment of your car. Please make sure you obey the local and state laws where you reside for modifying your vehicle.
