Autumn Driving Tips

Category: Cars - November 3, 2008

With the onset of autumn it is time for drivers to consider the affect the new season has on driving conditions. The first issue that autumn brings to the motorist is the issue of falling leaves. These leaves as the fall onto roads can make the asphalt slippery and can increase the changes of skidding of a driver losing control of their vehicle. Fallen leaves can also mass at the side of roads and block drains which in turn can cause flooding especially during heavy autumn rain.

Autumn also brings less daylight. These darker conditions can make it harder for drivers to see surface water. If the road is black pockets of water are harder to see and can cause a sharp, unexpected pull on the steering wheel when hit. In such a situation an unfocused driver could potentially lose control of the vehicle.

Throughout autumn and winter the sun sits lower in the sky. This is especially prevalent during sunset and sunrise and is a hazard to drivers because of the blinding effect it produces. This effect is especially harsh during the times many drivers are commuting to and from work. If driving into such a sun the lower your sun visor and slow down. If driving away from such a sun don’t think you’re unaffected, remember vehicles driving towards you may struggle to see you due to the blinding sun effect.

Generally speaking as autumn kicks in the days become colder. This can result in increased fog and reduced visibility. On fast moving roads such as motorways fog is particularly dangerous however fog will cause danger on all roads. Whenever you drive into fog you should slow down, turn your headlights to dip and, if visibility is below 100 metres, turn on your fog lights. Another consequence of fog is moisture forming on the windscreen. To remove the moisture switch on your windscreen wipers to clear the exterior and keep the interior clean to help maintain visibility.

Emergency or sharp braking can be even more dangerous when visibility is poor. Motorists should be prepared to slow down to enable then to stop within the distance they can see to be clear and give following drivers more time to react.
